    Day 1: Arrival Day: Welcome to Cusco

    Welcome to Cusco, the historic heart of the Inca Empire! Upon arrival at the airport, our friendly guides will greet you and assist with your luggage as we embark on a scenic drive to your hotel in the vibrant historic center.

    As we navigate the charming streets, you'll appreciate the captivating blend of ancient Inca and colonial Spanish architecture. Once settled in at the hotel, we’ll gather to assemble our bikes, ensuring they are ready for the thrilling adventures ahead.

    Afterward, take some time to explore Cusco’s enchanting streets. Visit local artisan shops, savor authentic Peruvian coffee, or wander through the bustling San Pedro Market, where you can discover traditional foods and crafts.

    Day 2: Riding the Maras and Chinchero Enduro MTB Trails

    Today’s Adventure: Prepare for an exhilarating day of mountain biking as we embark on the stunning trails of Maras and Chinchero, regions that are as rich in history as they are in breathtaking landscapes. As you navigate these trails, you'll not only enjoy the thrill of the ride but also immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and heritage of Peru.

    Our journey begins in Maras, where we’ll tackle two exhilarating routes. The first, a 7-kilometer trail with a descent of 600 meters, leads you through lush landscapes adorned with ancient terraces, offering magnificent views of the Sacred Valley. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife as you pedal through this picturesque setting. Following that, we’ll take on a more challenging 10-kilometer trail with a 700 meters descent, rewarding your efforts with panoramic vistas of the majestic Andean mountains and valleys. This ride encapsulates the essence of mountain biking in Peru—thrilling, scenic, and unforgettable.

    Next, we will make our way to Chinchero, a village steeped in Inca history. Here, an 8-kilometer trail with a 600-meter descent, beautifully blending cultural exploration with natural beauty. As you ride, you will encounter impressive archaeological sites and vibrant fields, all while learning about the traditional weaving practices that Chinchero is known for. The village's rich heritage comes alive through its crafts and textiles, making it a captivating stop on our adventure.

    After a day filled with exploration and excitement, we will settle down for the night in the charming town of Urubamba.

    Day 3: Exploring the Lamay Trails

    Prepare yourself for an unforgettable mountain biking adventure as we delve into the breathtaking Lamay Trails, located in the heart of the Urubamba Valley, offering stunning views and a thrilling ride.

    Both trails begin their ascent at an impressive altitude of 4,200 meters, where the crisp mountain air invigorates your spirit, and gracefully descend to 2,900 meters, covering a distance of 16 kilometers each. This significant elevation drop creates a dynamic biking experience, allowing riders to fully immerse themselves in the diverse landscapes and ecosystems. As you navigate the trails, you’ll be captivated by the changing scenery—from expansive high Andean grasslands to lush valleys, each turn presenting a new tableau of native flora and fauna.

    The Urubamba Valley, often referred to as the Sacred Valley of the Incas, is steeped in history and culture. This area is dotted with archaeological sites and remnants of Inca civilization, including ancient agricultural terraces and ruins that tell the rich story of this remarkable culture. Riding through this landscape allows you to not only appreciate the stunning natural beauty but also to immerse yourself in the heritage of the Incas, experiencing the same trails that they once traversed generations ago.

    After a day filled with adventure and exploration on the Lamay Trails, we’ll return to our accommodation in Urubamba.

    Day 4: Discovering Machu Picchu: A Full-Day Adventure

    Today marks an exhilarating journey as we delve into the wonders of Machu Picchu, one of the most iconic treasures of the Inca civilization. Early in the morning, we'll set off on an adventure that begins with a scenic drive to the train station in Ollantaytambo. The charming landscape will captivate you, with the Andes mountains providing a stunning backdrop.

    Upon reaching Ollantaytambo, we will board a train that takes us on a picturesque ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. This train journey offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and rivers, setting the stage for the awe-inspiring experience that awaits us. Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes, we will hop on a bus that winds its way up to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. As we approach the entrance, you’ll feel the excitement building in anticipation of exploring this marvel of ancient engineering and culture.

    With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, we will embark on a comprehensive tour of the Machu Picchu complex. You'll learn about the fascinating history, architecture, and the significance of this UNESCO World Heritage site. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the incredible ingenuity of the Inca people, from the intricate stonework to the agricultural terraces that define the landscape. After our enriching tour, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes for a well-deserved lunch. Here, you can savor some local Peruvian cuisine, reflecting on the morning’s discoveries and the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu.

    Day 5: Málaga Inca Avalanche

    Today promises to be one of the most exhilarating mountain biking experiences in Peru and South America! We’ll kick off our adventure with a scenic drive from Ollantaytambo to El Abra, a stunning mountain pass known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain. This location is not only a favorite among mountain bikers but also serves as the annual site for the prestigious Inca Avalanche downhill competition, attracting riders from around the globe.

    Once we arrive at El Abra, we’ll prepare for the ride ahead. The trail spans 18 kilometers and features a remarkable descent of 1,500 meters, starting at an elevation of 3,700 meters. This impressive height provides a unique perspective of the Andean landscape and the opportunity to experience the exhilarating rush of downhill biking.

    As you set off on this epic course, you'll navigate through stunning single tracks that wind alongside dramatic canyons. The terrain offers a mix of technical challenges and smooth stretches, making it suitable for riders of various skill levels. Each twist and turn reveals breathtaking vistas, with panoramic views of the majestic mountains and valleys that define this region, in the afternoon we will travel back to Ollantaytambo.

    Day 6: Lares Trail

    Today, we explore the stunning landscapes of Lares! This trail spans 22 kilometers and features a remarkable descent of 1,500 meters, promising a day filled with fluid riding and breathtaking scenery.

    Our journey begins in the high-elevation grasslands, where the crisp mountain air invigorates your spirit. As we set off on our bikes, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the beauty of the Andean landscape. The trail leads us into epic single tracks that follow ancient paths, carved over centuries by local communities.

    As you ride, keep your eyes peeled for alpacas and other native wildlife that roam freely in this serene environment. These gentle creatures are a common sight in the region, and their presence adds to the charm of your ride. You may also encounter local farmers working the land, tending to their crops in terraced fields that have been cultivated for generations. These ancient agricultural techniques are a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the local communities.

    The Lares trail is not only a scenic route but also a venue for international downhill competitions, showcasing the area’s reputation as a premier destination for mountain biking enthusiasts. The combination of thrilling descents and well-maintained paths makes it a favorite among riders looking for an adrenaline rush.

    As we navigate the trail, you’ll experience the fluidity of the ride, with sections that allow you to gain speed and confidence. The terrain varies, featuring smooth stretches that encourage you to let loose, as well as technical sections that challenge your skills. With every twist and turn, the stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys will take your breath away, offering perfect photo opportunities to capture the essence of this remarkable adventure.

    In the afternoon, we’ll make our way back to Cusco, where the excitement continues! Depending on our schedule, we may have the opportunity to take part in an Urban Downhill ride. This thrilling 4-kilometer course features a descent of 300 meters through the vibrant streets of Cusco, allowing you to experience the city from a unique perspective. The urban landscape presents its own set of challenges, with a mix of smooth pavement and technical sections, making for an exhilarating ride.

    Day 7: Cusco Exploration, local trails

    Today marks our final day of riding, and we’re excited to explore the local trails surrounding the vibrant city of Cusco! Get ready for a thrilling experience that showcases the beauty of this historic Inca city from a unique vantage point.

    We'll kick off the day by riding some of the best local trails, expertly crafted by the community's passionate riders. These trails, though shorter averaging around 4 kilometers, offer an exhilarating descent of approximately 300 meters. As we navigate through lush landscapes and undulating terrain, you'll have the chance to soak in stunning views of Cusco, with its blend of ancient architecture and breathtaking mountain backdrops. Riding alongside fellow adventurers, you'll feel the camaraderie as we traverse these scenic paths, each turn unveiling new perspectives of the city and its surroundings. Whether you’re an experienced rider or new to mountain biking, these trails are designed to provide a fun and engaging experience for everyone.

    As the day progresses, we’ll take a break to relax and unwind. In the late afternoon, we’ll indulge in a beer tasting activity, where you'll get to sample some of the finest local brews. This is a great opportunity to learn about the brewing process and the unique ingredients that contribute to the flavors of Peruvian beer, all while enjoying the company of your fellow riders.

    To cap off this memorable day, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner, where we can reminisce about the incredible adventures we’ve shared throughout the week. Enjoy delicious local cuisine, celebrate your accomplishments, and toast to new friendships and unforgettable experiences. As our journey comes to an end, take a moment to reflect on the breathtaking landscapes, thrilling rides, and rich cultural experiences that have made this trip truly special.     As our incredible journey comes to a close, today marks your departure day. We’ll ensure a seamless transition as you prepare to head back home or to your next destination.
    Our team will coordinate the transfers to the airport, scheduled according to your flight timings. Whether you have an early morning flight or a later departure, we’ll be there to assist you, making sure you have ample time to check in and reflect on the unforgettable experiences you’ve had.

Area Information

Sacred Valley, Peru

Also known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas or the Urubamba Valley, this valley is home to some of the most important Inca archaeological sites including Machu Picchu. Stretching from the Urubamba River, around 6,700 ft elevation, to the tops of massive Andean peaks such as Mount Veronica, 19,334 ft, the valley is known for its sweeping planes and steep mountain slopes. On this trip we will enjoy the mountains of the Sacred Valley by bike and stay in Cusco, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually inhabited town in all the Americas. This area is not only beautiful, it is also home to some of the best mountain biking in Peru.

  • Is my trip guaranteed to run?
    No, please note there is a minimum number of guests required (2) for each departure to run. Please wait to make travel arrangements until you have received confirmation from Activexpedition.
  • I’m ready to book. What next?
    To secure your spot, you can either book online or contact Customer Care at 1.866.386.1590 to set up your booking.
  • What skill/experience level is required for this trip?
    This trip is suited for advanced riders. "Advanced" means you are comfortable riding a variety of singletrack which may include tight trees, mud, loose rocks and sand and are comfortable doing so on aggressive terrain with little braking. You can hop over obstacles such as small roots and rocks that less advanced riders may wheel lift over. You use the brakes sparingly, and are open to taking some air off little rocks and roots. Your timing and coordination on all types of berms is solid. You are comfortable leaning your bike through the corner and exit with acceleration. The trails are mostly blue, and a few are black, with a mix of dirt, rocks, grass and gravel. There will always be transport support close to the trails, and guides will be in contact with the driver by radio.
  • How fit do I need to be for the riding?
    We recommend a fitness level 6 on a 9 point scale, with fitness level 6 defined as: You are capable of riding at a moderate pace for an average of 3-4 hours of pedal time each day. You can handle moderately steep climbs of up to a total of 1,650 vertical feet (500 m) in a day. You exercise on average 5 hours per week. Your exercise regime includes a combination of endurance training like riding a bike and strength training.
  • What will my guides be like?
    All our guides have a professional background from the Tourism University, this means they have a degree in guiding, so their knowledge and skills when leading a group are top-notch. Each guide has many years of experience, and they all have taken additional courses for other outdoor activities as well as have International First-Aid certifications. Moreover, they are all extremely personable and strive to deliver travel experiences of a lifetime.
  • What are the accommodations like?
    On this adventure we spend the first two nights in Cusco (at Rumipunku or similar), two nights in Urumbamba (Amaru del Valle or similar), two nights in Ollantaytambo (at Tunupa or similar), and a final night back in Cusco. We strive to use small and charming places that are unique and provide stellar service. Bring your own skis, tuned and ready to ride as rentals are not available..
  • Can my dietary restrictions be accommodated?
    Yes! If you have any allergies or food restrictions, please inform Activexpedition prior to your departure. Our guides are always ready to coordinate with chefs and restaurants for substitute meals and allergy needs.
  • Can I choose my roommate?
    Yes. If you have a roommate request, please let us know. By default, we will place two people of the same gender in a room with two beds.
  • What if I’m a solo traveler? Can I get my own room?
    Yes, single rooms are available on a first come, first served basis for an additional $500. Please check in with Customer Care before booking if this will determine your participation.
  • What gear should I bring? Should I bring my own bike, or can I rent one?
    You will be sent a recommended packing list after booking. Biking gear is not included in this expedition, so you can bring yours, our guides will help you put your bikes together and there will be storage to keep your bike bags while you ride. We also have full-suspension mountain bike rental available for US$75 per day, for a Trek Fuel EX5 or similar.
  • Is there a minimum age required for this trip?
    Yes, 12 years old.
  • What is transportation like?
    Driving time can take more than expected in Peru, as it is a country with roads meandering through the Andes mountains. We assure your comfort during transit no matter the size of the group.
  • What will the weather be like?
    The climate in Peru varies significantly throughout the year, thus we schedule our trips to occur during the dry season, which lasts from May to October. This season is characterized by clear skies and pleasant temperatures. This is the most recommended time for outdoor activities, especially hiking in the Andes. Temperatures: During the day, temperature highs in the mountains range from the high 60s to the high 70s. However, the nights can be quite cold (high 30s/low 40s), so remember to pack a jacket!
  • What sustainable practices does Activexpedition support?
    Activexpedition does our best not to produce any trash; we believe that recycling is not enough, so we try to avoid using any plastic or materials that pollute our environment. Every day we work towards being a zero-waste tour operator and our staff is well trained to have the least impact possible in our service areas. We also work with local indigenous communities in the different regions. By doing so we can teach our guests about the rich culture Peru, all the while helping the people preserve their traditions and lands. By working directly with local people, we can create a sustainable touristic income for the community.
  • Should I tip my guides?
    Yes, guide & driver gratuity is not included in your trip package and is recommended if you enjoyed your experience.
  • What are passport and/or visa requirements for Peru?
    Make sure you check your visa and passport validity and requirements per country. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 183 days. It is important that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
  • Should I purchase travel insurance?
    YES! Travel insurance is required for all trips, and allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, theft and/or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend World Nomads.
  • What if I need to change or cancel my trip?
    evoTrip upholds Activexpedition's policies regarding cancellation. Guests have: - 72 hours from booking to cancel with no fee. - 3 days after the booking - 90 days before the trip a $100USD cancellation fee per person would be charged. - 89 to 60 days before departure, 20% of the total price of the trip will be applied. - 59 to 30 days before departure, 50% of the total price of the trip will be charged. - 29 days or fewer, 100% of the trip cost will be forfeited. There may be additional fees associated with cancelling within the stated periods by hotel and transport providers. Clients are responsible for any cancellation fees incurred, and travel insurance is mandatory.
